I voted in favor of a zoning change at the intersection of Mercer Street and Dexter Avenue North yesterday in the Council's Planning, Land Use, and Neighborhood Committee. The "text amendment" rezone was sought by Vulcan and the University of Washington so taller medical research buildings can be built next to the existing research facilities immediately to
the east of the site. (UW medical research facilities occupy the old Washington Natural Gas site fronting on Mercer Street.)
This type of text amendment, in my opinion, should be reserved for unusual cases where a compelling public interest or benefit is available. So, the question I continually asked myself and others is whether there was a compelling public interest. I concluded there was. I gave a more detailed explanation (watch video) of my position during the committee meeting.
